Infection Control Doctor – “how to”
do this role as a clinical scientist

Microbiology webinars for trainees are aimed at those in infection training at all levels. The webinars take place last Wednesday of the month from 4 - 5pm, March - November 2026.

Infection prevention and control relies on identifying infection risks early, recognising when an outbreak may be developing and taking the right action to limit its spread. Clinical scientists in microbiology provide the laboratory expertise needed to support decisions about patient care and infection control.

In this webinar, Vicki Fleming will explore how clinical scientists can take on the responsibilities of an infection control doctor and work alongside the wider infection prevention and control (IPC) team. The session will relate the role to the realities of managing infection risks in healthcare settings, including the decisions and responsibilities involved when an outbreak occurs.

There will be time at the end of the session for attendees to ask questions and discuss the role with Vicki.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the responsibilities of an infection control doctor and how the role fits within the wider infection prevention and control team

  • Describe the criteria used to identify and manage an outbreak

  • Discuss industry outbreak examples and the approaches taken to investigate and manage them

Microbiology webinars for trainees

Following feedback from members, we are trying a new format for delivering training this year, replacing the in-person Microbiology training day at LabMedUK with free monthly webinars. The topics have been suggested by members and are delivered by senior clinical scientists and colleagues. In the final webinar of the year, trainees have the opportunity to present recent audits.
