Advances in molecular diagnostics and serological testing have transformed modern microbiology, enabling rapid and sensitive detection of infectious diseases. However, interpretation of these investigations remains highly dependent on clinical context, timing of sampling, and an understanding of each method’s limitations.
This interactive case-based lecture explores the practical applications of serology and PCR testing through real-world clinical microbiology scenarios. Participants will examine how laboratory results can support and occasionally mislead clinical decision-making.
The session will highlight key principles including diagnostic stewardship, window periods, seroconversion, false-positive and false-negative results, prolonged nucleic acid detection. Emphasis will be placed on integrating laboratory data with clinical assessment to optimise patient management.
Designed for microbiology and virology trainees, this lecture aims to strengthen diagnostic reasoning and improve confidence in interpreting serological and molecular investigations in routine clinical practice.

Microbiology training webinar series
Following feedback from members, we are trying a new format for delivering training this year, replacing the in-person Microbiology training day at LabMedUK with free monthly webinars. The topics have been suggested by members and are delivered by senior clinical scientists and colleagues. In the final webinar of the year, trainees have the opportunity to present recent audits.
