A day in the lab

Discover the different career paths in laboratory science, from training to what a typical day in the lab looks like

National Pathology Week 2026

Every November, the pathology community comes together to celebrate the people behind the diagnosis the scientists whose work in the laboratory shapes patient care every single day. National Pathology Week 2026 runs from 2-8 November, however we celebrate pathology week all month with different webinars. This year's theme, 'Welcome to the Lab', opening the door to what really goes on behind the scenes.

As proud members of the Pathology Alliance, LabMed is marking the week with a webinar that looks beyond the result on the page  and asks what makes a test genuinely useful.

Webinar overview

Choosing a career direction is hard when you can't see what the job actually involves. This webinar closes that gap.

You'll hear directly from trainee clinical scientists who have built careers in laboratory science, but did not discover the profession until her Master's, and whose path into the profession went through several hospitals and several very different roles before it clicked. Their message is simple: there's no single "right" way in, and every skill you pick up along the way counts.

Whether you're set on a career in laboratory medicine or simply curious about what's behind the lab door, this session will give you clarity, honest perspective, and a feel for a profession that quietly supports almost every area of modern healthcare.

Who should attend

This webinar is designed for students who are:

  • Curious about a career as a laboratory scientist, whether or not you've settled on a specific route
  • Studying biomedical science, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, or a related life science degree
  • Weighing up postgraduate study, training programmes, or direct entry routes into the profession
  • Wanting to hear from people currently in the profession

You don't need to have decided anything yet. If you're simply exploring what's out there, you're exactly who this session is for.

Highlights

  • Understand the different routes into a Clinical Scientist career, including the Scientist Training Programme (STP), postgraduate study, and less direct paths built through hands-on hospital experience
  • See how a PhD or Master's can shape a laboratory career, and what it adds beyond the STP itself
  • Get a realistic picture of day-to-day laboratory work, from handling clinical queries and actioning critical results to the unplanned moments that make no two days the same
  • Explore three pathology specialisms side by side immunology, microbiology, and biochemistry and how the its breadth supports specialties from A&E to oncology
  • Take away practical insight from scientists who've been exactly where you are now, including the reassurance that career paths into the lab are rarely straight lines
