LabMed Management and Leadership Course 2024
The Association held Management and Leadership course on 19 - 23 August 2024 at Canterbury Christchurch University. Designed for those preparing for FRCPath and senior laboratory management the course covered topics on clinical leadership, procurement and change management, psychology of organisation structures, managing budgets and demand, laboratory organisation, training, employment legislation, ethics, appraisal and people management. Chaired by Emma Walker, the course was led by senior members of the profession, NHS managers and the diagnostic industry professionals.

Monday
Welcome and an address from Katharine Hayden, President of the Association for Laboratory Medicine.
Tuesday
Morning Session: NHS Structure & Organisation
Learning Objective: Understand the relationship between NHS England, Trusts, Commissioning organisations, general practice, social care, etc. Flows of funding, accountability and regulation. Understand the strengths and weaknesses of organisational structures within the NHS.
Afternoon Session: People
Learning Objective: Understand and gain insight and skills to help address practical employment problems.
Wednesday
Morning Session: Finance
Learning Objective: Understand how finance is organised in the NHS including budgetary provision for pathology. Learn about budget statements, costing tests and procuring equipment. Learn about business cases and what goes in them.
Afternoon Session: Managed Serviced Contracts and Procurement
Learning Objective: To gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts behind the VAT incentive to procedure Managed Services, and, the legal framework that applies to public procurement with guidance on the pitfalls leading to unsuccessful procurement and how to avoid these. To gain an understanding of managed service contracts and the procurement process.
Thursday
Morning Session: Clinical Leadership
Learning Objective: To enable participants to differentiate between management and leadership and to develop personal insights for present/future leadership roles.
Afternoon Session: Pathology Networks and Beyond
Learning Objective: Understand current organisational structures in Pathology and be aware of the skills needed for leading large scale transformational change in pathology networks.
