The role of Trade Union representative

LabMed Trade Union representatives support and act as the link between members and the Union, ensuring that every voice is heard and every concern is addressed professionally and fairly.

  • Support clinical scientists - Provide guidence to colleagues from variety of laboratory medicine fileds; pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunilogy, immunology and other laboratory specialities.
  • Represent workplace matters - Representatives offer advice and support to members on work-related matters, such as sickness, grievances and disciplinaries.
  • Communication and advice - Inform members about workplace rights, union support services and developments in NHS policies, NHS Blood and Transplant and UKHSA practices.
  • Advocacy - Act as a  negotiating body for clinical scientists to ensure that professional standards are met by the workplace. 
  • Cooperation across the union - Coordinate with regional and national officers to ensure consistent and effective support across the organisation.

Facility time for Trade Union duties

Reps are entitled to facility time, a legally recognised arrangement that provides dedicated time each week to carry out your Trade Union responsibilities within working hours. Facility time is agreed at a local level and will vary depending on your employer, so it is important to confirm the specific arrangements within your organisation. Reps are also able to use workplace resources, such as IT equipment and office facilities, when carrying out Trade Union activities. This support allows you to balance your professional role with your responsibilities as a representative, ensuring you can provide effective support to members.

Support available for Trade Union representatives

LabMed reps are not expected to act beyond the level at which they are comfortable with when handling an issue. You will receive ongoing support from:

  • Trade Union national committee
  • Legal advice officers from Chartered Institute of Physiotherapy
  • Fellow LabMed reps through networking meetings

We also run a series of training sessions are provided for our reps and members, which can be viewed at Trade Union training series.
