National Member of Council
Purpose of the role
The National Member plays a key role in ensuring LabMed members’ voices are heard at our decision-making body.
This position will specifically focus on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), working closely with LabMed’s staff team, committee chairs and EDI champions. With their support, the National Member will help ensure our activities are transparent, collaborative, and inclusive, reflecting the diverse perspectives of our community.
Company director responsibilities
The national member is a company director of the Association for Laboratory Medicine. As a member of Council, they share responsibility for managing the company’s affairs in line with its articles and legal requirements.
Responsibilities of the role
- Review and approve new member applications as part of the Admission Committee.
- Advocate for a stronger focus on EDI within LabMed, identifying areas for improvement and supporting change.
- Contribute to the development of the EDI Working Group’s annual work plan.
- Support the LabMed’s EDI benchmarking and progression framework.
- Participate in relevant EDI networks such as the Science Council to share learning and good practice with other organisations.

Essential
- Member of the Association for Laboratory Medicine
- An interest in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion
- Share LabMed’s values
- Openness to new ideas that will grow the voice of LabMed and a willingness to challenge established views and practices
Desirable
- An understanding of the needs of early career health professionals in laboratory medicine
Time commitment
- Attend Council meetings (2hr online meeting, 3 per year)
- Attend EDI working group meetings (1hr online meeting, 4 per year)
- Availability for discussions/consultations with LabMed staff team, other members of Council and our committees
