Director of clinical practice
We ares seeking a director of clinical practice to help strengthen the clinical voice of laboratory medicine within the organisation and across the wider healthcare landscape.
This senior leadership role works closely with the director of scientific affairs and supports the work of the Scientific Affairs and Clinical Practice Committee (SACP), helping ensure that the clinical perspective of laboratory medicine is reflected in LabMed’s guidelines, scientific reviews, audit activity, research outputs and national consultations.
Previous postholders have been medically qualified; however, this is not an absolute requirement where equivalent clinical expertise can be demonstrated.
Purpose of the role
The director of clinical practice provides leadership for clinical practice within LabMed and supports the delivery of the Scientific Affairs and Clinical Practice Committee work plan.
Working in partnership with the director of scientific affairs, the role helps ensure that clinical practice and patient impact remain central to LabMed’s scientific and professional activities, including the development of good practice guidance, position statements, consultation responses and national audit work.
The role also helps strengthen engagement between clinicians, clinical scientists and other laboratory professionals, supporting collaboration across specialties to advance patient-centred laboratory medicine.
As a member of Council and Executive, the role also serves as a company director of the Association for Laboratory Medicine, sharing responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of the organisation.
What you’ll do

Support the director of scientific affairs in leading the Scientific Affairs and Clinical Practice Committee and delivering its annual work plan

Promote clinically focused contributions to good practice guidelines, position statements and other scientific outputs

Encourage participation of medically qualified and clinically focused members in guideline development groups and consultation responses, including NICE consultations

Represent LabMed in external consultations and stakeholder discussions relating to clinical practice where appropriate

Support engagement of clinically active members in scientific reviews, national audits and specialist interest groups

Work closely with the director of education, training & workforce to promote educational activities relevant to clinical practice in laboratory medicine

Contribute to responses to member requests for LabMed position statements, in consultation with Council

Deputise for the director of scientific affairs when required
What You’ll Bring

You are currently practising within a laboratory medicine specialty in the UK, or able to demonstrate equivalent clinical expertise

Have a strong understanding of the clinical application of laboratory medicine in routine practice

Is a member of the Association for Laboratory Medicine

Have demonstrable leadership experience

Is willing to represent the Association at stakeholder meetings and consultations

Is interested in supporting collaboration between clinicians, clinical scientists and laboratory professionals

The time commitment includes a small number of online meetings each year across Council, Executive and the Scientific Affairs and Clinical Practice Committee, plus one annual in-person committee meeting in London and an annual strategy workshop.
