New programme to build AI and informatics skills in laboratory medicine
LabMed has launched a new online learning programme designed to help laboratory professionals develop the digital, data and AI skills increasingly needed in modern healthcare.
Developed by LabMed’s AI and Informatics Special Interest Group, AI and Informatics in Laboratory Medicine introduces clinical scientists, biomedical scientists and medics to healthcare informatics, practical data analysis, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The programme combines expert-led teaching from the NHS, academia and industry with hands-on learning, including the use of R programming to analyse laboratory datasets. Participants will explore informatics career pathways, data visualisation and communication, and the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in healthcare.
The course has been created in response to growing demand for informatics skills across laboratory medicine, as digital systems and data-driven approaches become an increasingly important part of diagnostic services.

“Digital technologies, data science and AI are transforming laboratory medicine, but many professionals have had little opportunity for formal training in these areas. This programme is designed to help bridge that gap, giving participants practical skills and a better understanding of how these technologies can be applied safely and effectively to improve patient care.”
Ian Godber, President, The Association for Laboratory Medicine
The programme begins with a self-guided online R course in August 2026, followed by four live online modules running between September and December. All sessions include interactive discussions and are supported through the LabMed Learning Academy.
Places on the first cohort are limited to 30 participants.
