11.00 Effective research design and getting published! (Cont) - Helen Jopling & Phillip Monaghan
Research is a critical pillar of laboratory medicine, allowing evidence-based advances in the field. This workshop will consider the elements required to embark on research with the aim of publication. Effective research design requires a clear and achievable research question. The workshop will cover tools which can be used to aid with formulating a research question and consider the parameters which should be included. Understanding the ethical requirements of research study design will also be covered, with an opportunity to learn more about the research ethics application process and the requirements of publication. The workshop will focus on publication with examples of research ideas and topics of interest which are relatively straight-forward to conduct yet provide valuable evidence for the field. During this session we will reflect on perceived barriers and challenges of the peer-review publication process, the basic requirements of submitting a manuscript to a journal such as the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry and where to finds further resources to support authors.
Emma is a principal clinical scientist based in the clinical biochemistry laboratories at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She is Chair of the LabMed Education Group and Deputy Director of Education, Training and Workforce. Outside of education and training, Emma’s main interest in the laboratory is quality, including EQA, IQC and measurement uncertainty. Emma is a member of the RCPath’s Chemical Pathology National Quality Assurance Panel, which oversees the running of EQA schemes in biochemistry.

Helen completed her Biochemistry degree and PhD at the University of Leeds with a year spent studying in Paris. Her clinically focussed PhD led to training as a clinical scientist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, before taking up a substantive post at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Helen started guest lecturing on the MSc programme provided at the University of Manchester to accompany STP training, and this led to taking on a permanent contract. Helen is Director of Education in the school of medical sciences, leading the provision of degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Alongside this Helen maintains a teaching and research portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry and Medical Education, and has a role as an associate editor for the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry.
After graduating from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Biochemistry with Applied Molecular Biology, Phillip went on to complete a PhD in Molecular Enzymology at the University of Leicester. He subsequently commenced training in Clinical Biochemistry at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, Alder Hey Hospital and University Hospital of South Manchester. Phillip has been a Clinical Scientist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and more recently The Christie Pathology Partnership in Manchester, UK, for the past 15 years, and is Clincal Director of Pathology. Phillip is Honorary Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Cancer Sciences Division within the School of Medical Sciences, previously lecturing on the MSc Clinical Sciences programme and the Advanced Therapeutics Medicinal Products programme. Phillip is a member of the UK NEQAS Steering Committee for Immunochemistry, and previous Chair of the NQAAP for Chemical Pathology (Chair: 2019-2022). Phillip is Chair of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for Test Evaluation (WG-TE) and is Editor-in-Chief for the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry.
Special research interests include evidence-based laboratory medicine (test evaluation), biochemical endocrinology, and translational biomarker development. Phillip is Co-Investigator on the VALTIVE clinical trials programme for the validation of a novel vascular response biomarker to guide VEGFi therapy in ovarian cancer. Phillip was awarded the Silver Research Medal from the Royal College of Pathologists in 2012 for his work on serum cortisol measurement in Cushing’s syndrome.
