A neonate was born with abnormalities that were immediately apparent. The cause of these was not so obvious. Following discussion with virology, further investigations took place and a diagnosis was reached. Multi-disciplinary working between the laboratory and the clinical team was essential for optimal management.

Naomi Gadsby
Naomi Gadsby has a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and completed her pre- and post-registration clinical scientist training in Medical Microbiology in NHS Lothian. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists by examination in Medical Microbiology in 2017. Since 2019 she has been working as a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Medical Microbiology at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Dominic Haigh
Dominic is a medical doctor who trained in Clinical Virology and Infectious Diseases in Manchester. He works Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership for the NHS and the UK Health Security Agency. He teaches and examines for the University of Manchester. Dominic enjoys interesting cases and education, and has been involved in research, audit and Quality Improvement work regarding Covid, mpox, High-Consequence Infectious Diseases and other infections.

Kate Phillips
Catherine (Kate) is a Clinical Scientist and is on the Higher Specialist Scientist Training programme in Clinical Virology. She currently works with the Manchester Microbiology Partnership for both NHS and UKHSA. She has previously worked in Microbiology as a Senior Biomedical Scientist. Catherine has interest in Hepatitis C, DNA viruses, and the application of next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics in viral research.

Zoie Aiken
Dr Aiken has over 20 years of experience working in clinical microbiology and is based at Manchester Foundation Trust. Her specialist areas are in the management of infections in paediatric haematology and stem-cell transplant patients and critical care patients. She has a keen interest in education and oversees the training of Clinical Scientists locally as an STP Training Officer and nationally as Training and Education Lead for the LabMed Microbiology Professional Committee and Lead Assessor for the NSHCS end point assessments. She is also joint Head of Research and Development for the Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) and Deputy Chair of the Paediatric Antimicrobial Guideline Development Group.

Thomas Lamb
Thomas Lamb is an infectious diseases consultant working at North Manchester General Hospital. Thomas has taken time out of his medical training to work in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. During this time he has developed an interest in Toxicology and snakebite. Following his return to the UK, he has completed registrar training in Infection medicine before obtain a CCT in Medical microbiology and infectious diseases in 2024.
