There are a number of basic statistical and mathematical calculations required for the implementation of assays into routine use. These would include performance target setting to ensure assays are medically fit for purpose, measurement of uncertainty and population related statistics such as sensitivity and specificity. These calculations and procedures are at the heart of assessing risk to patients and services which is at the core of ISO15189:2022
I started as a clinical scientist in Leeds in 1992 and further worked in Chelmsford, Nottingham and then Birmingham since 2004. My career path has taken in areas such capillary electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and data analysis. There has been a consistent thread of using technology, computing and data to make and improve things for services and patients. Analysing data with appropriate techniques is a fundamental skill that all scientists need and underpins future as technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
